Jalisco Style From the plateau around Guadalajara, Mexico, comes a folk style of music and dance bold and elegant unlike any in Mexico. This is cattle country, and the center of the best dressed cowboys (charros) in Mexico, specially when parading. The large bands and dancers adopted the highly ornamented garment style of the hacienda owners of old. The women of Jalisco are, for the most part, a mix of Spanish and Native American: "mestizo" known for their beautiful eye shape and dignified manners. Because their dance forms come from a time of great modesty and pride in the way dignified people dressed, the skirts reached the ankles. Such large skirts allow for fancy decorations, and flashy flinging while performing the zapateado on the wooden floor. Though there are many other forms of Mexican dance, this became the best known. |
